• Number of crematoria: Approximately 1,500 (in 2004)

• Notes on the number of crematoria:
  1. In 2004 there were 5,379 crematoria in Japan. Among these only 1,500 were conducting one or more cremations a year and were operating with three basic elements, i.e. a building, a cremator and air exhaustion equipment. Most of the remaining crematoria were open-field crematoria, where cremation was conducted with natural materials.
  2. In 2004 18 crematoria were newly constructed at the following locations:
     • Amagasaki City
     • Imabari City
     • Kawasaki City
     • Nabari City
     • Ohta 5 wards (Tokyo Metropolis)
     • Saitama City
     & 12 other locations
