- Notes on the number of crematoria:
- In 2004 there were 5,379 crematoria in Japan. Among these only 1,500 were conducting one or more cremations a year and were operating with three basic elements, i.e. a building, a cremator and air exhaustion equipment. Most of the remaining crematoria were open-field crematoria, where cremation was conducted with natural materials.
